Fake Security Software Scammers Jump on Conficker

Scammers are taking advantage of the Conficker virus by bringing up sites that purport security software that removes the Conficker worm from your network. Such sites are fake.

EU issues ultimatum on internet privacy

Faced with a regulatory clampdown from the EU Commission, internet firms are urged to improve their approach to online privacy.

It is felt that “basic consumer rights in terms of transparency, control and risk” are being violated by ISPs, major websites and advertising firms, through data collection and behavioral targeting.

EU tells members to get ready for disaster

The EU is asking for the development of a strategy to protect Europe from cyber-attacks. Instead of disaster recovery procedures designed to protect corporations, the EU is asking for procedures to be developed for nations.

  • The EU is asking for plans that cover five factors, those being:
  • Preparedness and prevention
  • Detection and response
  • Mitigation and recovery
  • International co-operation
  • Establishment of consistent criteria for European critical infrastructure.

One in Five Global Broadband ISP Users Connect at over 5Mbps

Nearly 20% of the world’s broadband ISP users are connecting at speeds greater than 5Mbps, according to Akamai’s quarterly “State of the Internet” report. () South Korea continues its lead with the country that has the highest average speed of 15Mbps.

This report also covers which countries were sources for most attack traffic, such as DDoS.

Romanian phisher gets 50 month prison term

Using a DDoS attack to demonstrate authenticity, a group of six Romanians used a denial of service attack to validate why a bank’s website was down due to the website being down due to being upgraded. In the mean time users were redirected to another site to verify their information.

One member of Romanian team was sentenced to four years in a US prison; the first foreign defendant to be convicted in the US for phishing offenses.
