Obama Cybersecurity Report Addresses Critical Infrastructure and Privacy Issues

Last Friday President Obama addressed the public regarding the need for his administration being more focused on the issue of cybersecurity. Along with is announcement came the release of a widely anticipated document based upon a 60-day review of the nation’s cyber security health.

While some of the strategic elements continue the typical top-down approach when it comes to working through cyber issues, two of the strategic initiatives called for working in “coordination” with private industry. The two being referenced include the preparation of a cybersecurity incident repose plan and create an information and threat-sharing plan.

Contractors Vie for Plum Work, Hacking for U.S.

With spending towards missiles and other traditional warfare weaponry expected to decline, military contractors are now looking to expand their business to cover weaponry for cyber warfare.

President Obama’s view of the country’s digital infrastructure as a strategic national asset will renew focus on tighter security requirements for energy and healthcare. Also, with federal spending on computer security now estimated to total $10 billion each year, including classified programs, the country’s largest military contractors are busy trying to lock up the best and the brightest of hackers and companies in the security field to help secure their spot for raking in new funding to be dedicated towards the nation’s cyber security efforts.

Do Executives Take Security Seriously? Survey Says Yes

Asking IT directors if their executives backed up claims of support with tangible support, 70% said “Yes” in that their executives provide meaningful support to their respective security organizations. High-profile security breaches in the last couple of years illustrate such data-theft attacks are here to stay. Aside from security requirements handed down through regulation, executives notice when brand-name companies fall prey to targeted attacks.
