Report: botnets sent over 80% of all June spam

With 90.4% of all e-mail being spam, 83.2% came from botnets. Cutwail, doubling since March, is the largest and most active of the botnets accounting for 45% of all the spam, with Mega-D, Xarvester, Donbot, Grum and Rustock providing the remainder of the large botnet produced spam.

China Delays ‘Green Dam’ Mandate

Citing the need by computer makers that they needed more time before they could implement the massive undertaking of installing the Green Dam software on each computer sold to China, China’s Ministry of Industry and IT has delayed the mandate. Originally set for July 1, 2009 China wanted the software installed on every new PC in China so as to protect it’s user-base from pornography and other items that may be harmful.

Due to the vulnerabilities associated with the software PC makers feared being seen as having quality issues.

A letter of concern was also presented to the Premier and signed by an international group of 20 business associations. Another letter was sent from the US Department of Commerce raising numerous concerns raised by global technology companies.

Security Firms Warn of Michael Jackson Spam

To illustrate the point of how scammers capitalize on trendy topics to trick people in handing over information, 8 hours after the death of Michael Jackson spam e-mails started circulating regarding information on Michael. The e-mail asked users to reply, upon which basic information about a user’s respective e-mail account could be gleaned. To further illustrate their tenacity, spam, geared to sell rogue anti-virus software was distributed on the same day, shortly after the death of Farrah Fawcett.

Max Vision pleads guilty to running cybercrime bazaar

Providing a space whereby 4,500 cybercriminals traded credit card information totaling close to $86 million in fraudulent purchases, hacker Max Vision has plead guilty to trafficking around 1.8 million credit card numbers and running a cybercrime clearing house.
