Undersea Cable Damage Slows Internet in China

An earthquake damaged undersea cables Monday, disrupting Internet service in China. US and some Asian-based websites were either partially or fully inaccessible by Chinese Internet users. A total of 9 undersea cables were damaged due to this week’s earthquake and last week’s typhoon Morakot. China was not initially impacted due to the typhoon. The earthquake, however, damaged the backup cables China was relying on after the typhoon. Full service is expected to be restored in about a week.

US military cyber force activated

The US Air Force activated its new cyberspace combat unit. Providing “combat-ready forces trained and equipped to conduct sustained cyber operations” the 24th Air Force, when fully manned, will operate with several thousand personnel. Within the 24th Air Force is the 688th Information Operations Wing and the 67th Network Warfare Wing along with various combat communications units. While the 688th will serve as more of the operations center of excellence, the 67th will be the more offensive of the units, executing “computer network exploitation and attacks”.

Also in the process of establishing similar cyberwar units are the US Army, the US Navy as well as a tri-service cyber command co-located with the US’ NSA.

AusCERT sidelined in CERT revamp

In effort to efficiently battle cyber crime, while fitting into the government’s plan of fighting cyber crime, AusCERT will be combined with GovCERT and operate within the Defence’s new Cyber Security Operations Centre.

New alliance aims to unite malware fight

AVG Technologies, McAfee, Microsoft, Sophos, Symantec and TrendMicro have banded together to form the Industry Connections Security Group (ICSG). The group’s mission is to formalize the sharing of virus samples among security researchers instead of relying on individual relationships. The ICSG is found within the IEEE.
