Targeted e-mails distribute malware in PayChoice breach

In an unusual tactic where hackers sought instant trust from their victims, users of PayChoice’s portal for e-mail with his customers, received an e-mail from hackers whose goal was to have the computer user download the Bredolab Trojan onto their system. Hackers did this by targeting the e-mail to the individual recipient, including their user name, login IDs and partial passwords. Inclusion of such information helped recipients to feel the e-mail was legitimate. The Trojan took advantage of holes in IE, Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader.

It is unclear how many of PayChoice’s customers downloaded the Trojan. PayChoice is a payroll processor.

Banking Trojans double as scareware runs wild

485,000 distinct samples of scareware were detected in the first six months of 2009, making it 5 times the number for the whole of 2008.

A new high of 37,165 different pieces of phishing were detected in May of this year, approximately a 7% increase of 2008’s high of 34,758.

Of the years first six months, the main target for phishers was payment services organizations, such as PayPal over financial services.

Sweden displaced the US as the country hosting the highest number of phishing websites.

Australian Pirate Party sets sail

The Pirate Party has formed in Australia. The Party has 550 members, the requisite number for Australia to begin the process of recognizing the group as a legitimate Party. Having formed in other countries, with one seat in the EU Commission won by the Party, party members seek political change in support of anti-Internet censorship and decriminalization of non-commercial file sharing,

DHS to hire up to 1,000 cybersecurity experts

With cybersecurity being one of the US’ more urgent priorities, the Department of Homeland Security will be hiring 1,000 cybersecurity experts over the next 3 years, with the goal of turning the DHS into a “world-class cyberorganization”.
